52 Weeks of Outdoor Science Experiments

I've always loved science and my youngest daughter wants to be a scientist when she finishes school. When asked if I wanted to join this fun blog tour for the new book Outdoor Science Lab for Kids: 52 Family-Friendly Experiments, I jumped at it!

This book conjures 52 family-friendly at home science experiments that range from the awesome to the "oh my gosh!" With Halloween fast approaching, these simple, inexpensive and fun experiments will have you running for their lab coats and crazy hair wigs!

These experiments can be done outside, keeping your inside clean and mess free! With 52 experiments you can do one a week with your kids or several each week during the summer. Lots of opportunities to have fun and experiment with this book.

I have a fun experiment for you to try out from the book Outdoor Science Lab for kids.

Mix up a batch of non-Newtonian fun.

Materials

Medium-size bowl
Spoon (optional)
1 cup + 2 tablespoons (147 g) cornstarch
1/2 cup (120 ml) water
Food coloring (optional for colored goo)

Protocol

Step 1: Mix together the cornstarch, water, and food coloring in a medium-size bowl using a spoon or your fingers. The goo should be the consistency of thick syrup. (Fig. 1, 2, 3)
Step 2: Remove some goo from the bowl and roll it into a ball. (Fig. 4)
Step 3: Stop rolling it and let it drip between your fingers. (Fig. 5)
Step 4: Put the goo on a tray or cookie sheet. What happens if you slap your hand down on it? Can you make it splash?
Step 5: If the goo gets too dry, just add a little more water.

What happens if you add more or less water? Does it retain the same properties? Can you think of some practical uses for non-Newtonian fluids?
Safety Tips and Hints
Food coloring will move from the goo to hands and clothes, so beware.
For colored goo, simply add the food coloring to the water before mixing with cornstarch.
Without food coloring, this project cleans up easily with water.

The Science Behind the Fun

Most fluids and solids behave in expected ways and hold their fluid or solid properties when you push, pull, squeeze, pour, or shake them. However, some fluids, known as non-Newtonian fluids, don’t follow the rules. Cornstarch goo is one of these renegade fluids. It’s called a shear-thickening non-Newtonian fluid, and when you apply stress to it, the atoms in the cornstarch rearrange to make it act more like a solid.
That’s why when you let the goo sit in the palm of your hand or let it slowly slide between your fingers it looks like liquid, but if you squeeze it, stir it, or roll it around in your hands, it looks and feels more like a solid.
Someday, fluids such as these may be used to make such things as bulletproof vests that will move with the wearer but stop speeding projectiles.

Saying Goodbye to Mean Streat (Cedar Point)

The Mean Streak is one of my favorite wooden roller coasters. It was built in 1991 at Cedar Point and at the time it was the tallest wooden coaster in the world with the longest drop! This has been our go to ride the last few years since there is never a wait. My kids hate lines, they are totally of this generation and do not want to wait more then 15 minutes for a ride. I remember waiting hours for every ride, lol.

Anyways, we go on this ride all the time. I cannot even believe it gone now. I think my daughter and I, maybe a handful of other people were actually upset at the rides funeral. While the funeral was funny and made tons of jokes and Mean Streaks expanse which were funny, my daughter was not thrilled about it.

The funeral was Friday and we went back to Cedar Point on Sunday. It was really hard seeing the Mean Streak and not being able to go on it. We also were not able to ride it Friday, we got stuck at the gate check in process and missed getting in line by minutes. It was actually really poor planning on Cedar Points part I think, the entire process was bad. They only had the Mean Streak open for rides for an hour which of course was way to short. The line was crazy and they stopped it at the hour mark. The ceremony was supposed to start after that, but was 45 minutes late trying to get all the riders off which they weren't able to do, so all those last riders missed the actual "funeral".  At this point, I was kind of glad we missed the line because I wanted to see the ceremony and I actually had went to Cedar Point the previous Sunday and rode Mean Streak 5 times because I didn't want to chance missing that final ride.

Once the ceremony started late, it was actually really cute. When it was done, everyone was supposed to march to the graveyard at the front of the park and follow a procession but the people that were taking down the sign couldn't be found. Yeah seriously! After a couple minutes of confusion, we were told to just start walking. After getting almost to the front, finally we see two costumed characters go running by with the Mean Streak sign. In a way this was probably better because I probably would have started crying seeing them take down that sign. I'm not kidding, I was more emotional over this roller coast since the announcement in August than I am over people.

video

Once they stuck the sign on the already dug grave, they just left. That was it. It was pretty strange, not planned well but worth going to.

It was hard not being able to go on it and any ride that you can see that huge coaster from just makes me kind of sad. We renewed our passes for next year but I really want to stop going. I'm hoping for the RMC rebuild that is rumored because that will be an amazing roller coaster! The short waits will be gone though. Seriously, the Mean Streak was the best when you go all the way to the back of the park and see the crazy wait on Maverick, just walk over to Mean Streak and get right back on. The Sunday we went and rode 5 times, the first couple times the place was packed and the cars were totally full making it one of the funnest times I've rode it in years. One thing with the Mean Streak depending on where you sit and how many were on it, each ride was different. Oh I will miss it so much!

Recital Time of Year - Some Cute Ballerina dolls for your ballerina

I'm no longer a mom of 2 dancers anymore :( My oldest graduated last year, so this year it is just my freshman dancing. We have our recital this Saturday and no Nationals this year which is strange.  I think my popular post year round is Gift Ideas for Dance Recital, so decided to do a bit of an update on some of the newer ballerina things out there.

I came across these dolls which I'm dying over, they are so cute! They actually are what inspired this post. Now I don't own these {yet} but they have 4.3 out of 5 stars with 67 reviews, so I feel safe recommending them. All of these recommendations are just my opinion though, do your research.

The Ballerina Princess Doll Pack N Play Gift Setfor $15.95 at time of writing. You get (3) 10" dolls for this price in baby pink, dark pink and purple. They are so cute! I personally would recommend these more for decoration than play. They would look adorable on a shelf!

Here is a soft ballerina doll that is more for play, the 17" Ballerina Doll for Little Girls' Ballet Dance Recital. I love that she has pink yarn hair too. That was one thing I always had a hard time with. My oldest has brown hair and my youngest had blonde hair growing up. I always had to try and find the right hair color and hope it also corresponded with their favorite colors like pink/blonde/, etc.

If you want to give more than a doll or instead of a doll, there is a cute book called I'm a Ballerina! (Little Golden Book).

A little girl invites us into her ballet class, and later performs onstage (gulp!) in her first recital. Young readers will enjoy seeing what happens in a class, and young ballerinas will see themselves in this book.

The Aurora World Ballerina 14.5" Doll with Blonde Hair is an affordable doll option especially for younger girls. She is $11.10 at time of writing and it is a well known brand so you know you are getting better quality than the unknown brands. There is a brunette version that costs a little bit more right now, Aurora World Brunette Ballerina 14.5" Plush in pink and Aurora World Ballerina 14.5" Doll with Brunette Hair in lavender.

This mouse, SO CUTE! I'm a total sucker for stripes. The Organic Farm Buddies Plush Toy, Ballerina Mouse.

Favorite Concealer: NYX Cosmetics Concealer Wand

I love love love this NYX Cosmetics Concealer Wand in Porcelain. It has amazing coverage and it is only $4.99 plus cruelty free!

I originally discovered this concealer when looking for an affordable green concealer that had good reviews. I had purchased some mineral green powder on ebay before, but it always made a huge mess for me when trying to apply it while out. (otherwise I loved it).

I started subscribing to the Subscribe and Save for the Green concealer, which I still buy and use. Then one day, I was reading the reviews again for whatever reason and happened to see someones review on the porcelain. She was using it to cover red which is why I was using the green. I figured I'd give it a try and fell in love! This stuff is amazing and again only $5 or less! I just subscribed to the yellow to try that one out.

Plackers Dual Grip Fruit Smoothie Swirl Kids’ Flossers & Flosser Friend

I was sent Plackers new Dual Grip Fruit Smoothie Swirl Kids’ Flossers, designed with a unique dual grip handle making them easy for kids of all ages to use and allowing parents to assist. This new angled head and dual grip allows a place to grip if your child is able to floss or for us parents to floss our little ones teeth for them. I personally have tried these and the floss is amazing quality. It is engineered not to shred, stretch or break and so far so good! I also have not experienced them getting stuck in teeth which is something that happens to me with most floss. These are also smaller in size than regular flossers which is perfect for your children's smaller mouth size. They are also bpa free!

Flossing regularly removes plaque and food from areas between the teeth that can’t be reached by brushing alone. “Dentists recommend as soon as a child has two teeth that are touching, parents should help them begin a daily flossing routine,” said Greg McCormick, Senior Vice President of Global Innovation and Technology for Plackers’ parent company, Ranir. “Plackers new Kids’ Flossers were designed specifically with parents and children in mind to offer an easy, fun and flavorful way to teach kids about flossing and healthy dental care habits. If parents teach their kids healthy habits when they’re young, they will be more likely to carry on those habits throughout their lives.”

Another new addition to the line is the Flosser Friend™. This super cute monkey-shaped flosser holder is meant to amp up the fun factor and help kids look forward to flossing. Not only is the flosser holder a fun way to store kids’ flossers and keep them close at hand, its flip-up cover design allows kids to easily access their flossers. The Flosser Friend is easy to open and clean, and comes pre-packaged with 30 dual grip kids’ flossers.

Plackers are available Nationwide.

Review: Worth Dying For

Worth Dying For Worth Dying For by Rita Herron
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I listened to this with Kindle Unlimited. I enjoyed the first two books, but this one was just really bad. I felt like I kept missing a story line in the beginning. I didn't care for the two main characters this book focused on Liz and Rafe. I felt like they were extremely whiny and immature, also bad agents (not as in good vs bad, but in horrible at their jobs).

I have a hard time not finishing a book, so I suffered through it. I wanted to find out the continuation of Amelia's story as well. I pretty much had everything figured out, even though there was one surprising twist on who #6 was which gave the book the 2 stars.

The book had a ton of repetition, it could have been much shorter. I found myself constantly rolling my eyes and Liz and Rafe continuously thought the same things over and over and over. I read some of the bad reviews that talked about Liz's choices and I thought the reviewers were exaggerating, they were not. I read a lot of crime fiction and the characters usually make stupid moves which you expect to keep the book/tv/movie exciting. However these were just plain old dumb moves that didn't even seem feasible.

This book was just really bad. I'm not sure I can make myself listen to the last book. Plus I read a review to see if the fourth book was any better and someone basically spoiled the entire book in one super short paragraph. I will have to be really desperate for something to listen to, in order to continue with the fourth in this series.
