MommyDocs Summer Staycation Safety

We usually put all of our extra money into our girls dancing, so vacationing is unfortunately out of the question. Summer is a great time for us to cut down our spending, save up some money & just relax. Of course the kids get pretty bored with that, so we have to find cheap ways to entertain them!

I know with the economy, other families are also taking that approach. Mom Central also knows that, so they got together with the MommyDocs (Clorox) and came up with a list of Five Tips for Summer Staycations to keep your family safe and your house cleaner during the summer months this year.

Staying Safe at BBQs. According to a recent survey, 70 percent of Moms are cooking more at home and many are likely switching up their meal routine with an outdoor BBQ. Make sure your kids have a safe BBQ experience by keeping them away from the flames and any sharp knives. Also, don't forget to check that your child's hamburger is fully cooked. Always keep a thermometer on hand to be sure all food has reached the appropriate inside temperature.

Keep the Pool Cool and Clean. If your kids love to spend hot afternoons in kiddie pools, you know the importance of cleaning the pool area. Dump out water after each session, and keep the pool clean by disinfecting it with a solution of ¾ cup bleach* to one gallon of water. Don't forget to rinse well and dry thoroughly after each cleaning (never leave any water in the pool). Be sure to always supervise children when they are in or around any water. (* Always remember to read and follow precautions and usage directions before using cleaning products)

Staying Healthy and Hydrated. Spending time in the heat means kids will be more prone to becoming dehydrated. Remind kids to take frequent rest/drink breaks in the shade when playing outside and try to avoid activity during peak sun hours. Encourage fluids before, during, and after outside activities.

Having Peace of Mind at Playgrounds. Sometimes just getting out of the house is the best way to keep it clean, but before letting kids loose at the playground, ensure the safety of the equipment. Swing seats and slides can really heat up in the sun – test them out before your kids hop on to avoid burns. Be sure the playground surface is composed of a soft material to help prevent injury. All playground equipment should be routinely checked for any broken or loose parts. As always, adult supervision is a must at all times!

Saving on Spills. Spending extra time around the house, especially with kids, often means more spills to clean up. Synthetic sponges and kitchen cloths can start to smell and carry bacteria, but you don't have to toss them out after a few uses. One option to reduce bacteria is to sanitize sponges and dishrags by soaking them in a bleach solution (¾ cup of bleach* to a gallon of water) for 5 minutes in the sink. Don't forget to rinse and dry when done. A wet sponge can also be microwaved to get rid of bacteria. (* Always remember to read and follow precautions and usage directions before using cleaning products)

Any of you doing the Staycation thing this summer vs traveling? If so, what are you tips?

We have been doing library programs, going to the park & beach. Luckily, we have 3 weeks of dance right now this month & possibly some in August to keep the girls busy. The rest of the time they have been mainly just playing with friends though.

Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits

Have you gotten into the Guitar Hero craze yet? My brother is obsessed with it & my daughters love it as well.

The makers of Guitar Hero introduced Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits for the Nintendo DS system, a follow-up to the On Tour and Decades games previously released. The game features 28 songs, all radio-edits of modern rock hits from bands including Coldplay, Fall Out Boy, Weezer, The Strokes and Wolfmother. Besides being able to take the game on the road, the Nintendo DS has a wireless feature that allows song streaming and multiplayer modes.

Product Features

  • Select from eight characters including two new rockers making their debut on the DS and deck them out with stylish threads and hot guitars and set out to rock.
  • Unique, portable gaming experience for the Nintendo DS that utilizes the innovative Guitar Grip and pick-stylus to strum the touch-activated screen to rock out on the go.
  • Prove your shredding skills in single player modes including Career, Quick Play or Guitar Hero mode, with new career modes included for Lead Guitar and Bass, or use Practice Mode to nail those tricky solos.
  • Multiplayer modes including: Play Face Off, Pro Face off, Co-op and Guitar Duel together utilizing local wireless play.
  • Blow into the DS microphone when the touch screen is set on fire in pyrotechnics, or sign an autograph when requested to by an excited fan.
Mom Central sent me Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits to try out. When I first got it, I just set it on the kitchen table. Later my brother walked by and yells out Oh Damn. I was like, oh my god what happened? He yells, you finally got something good to review (LOL) He's like can I have it? Um no, my girls would kill me.

Since they were outside playing all day though, he finally talked me into letting him be the first one to try out. I had to fight him to get the game back a couple days later so my girls could try it. Everyone loved it! This game gets 5 stars in my book!

You can purchase Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits at Amazon along with many other fine retailers.

A Girls Must Have ~ The Skirty

I came across this company last year and fell in love. In love, seriously!

I can't believe I didn't review this sooner, I swear I did but I was checking through things & could not find it.

My youngest (just turned 8) wears skirts and dresses all the time. We used to just stick tight shorts under it, but now we only use the Skirty. This thing is so stinkin' cute and functional!

If you have a daughter, niece, granddaughter you have to buy one of these things. They are just adorable on. Normally you can't see it, but at times when my daughter is really playing, you can see the lace and it looks like a nice addition to the outfit.

The Skirty is made by Rebekah Merkle. She makes an adorable line of girls clothes including dresses, shirts, skirts, accessories and of course the skirty!

Her philosophy ~

Amoretti is a company that has grown as an extension of my life. It began with the clothes I design and sew for my own three lovely daughters. I believe that you shouldn't have to choose between beautiful clothes and practical clothes. That dressing up should be easy. That being a lady isn't old fashioned. And that "ladylike" most emphatically does not mean "fussy." And since Amoretti is so tied to my life, you could sum up the design philosophy as good old, down-home, American... but with just a touch of an English accent.

The Skirty comes in a wide range of sizes from 2 - 12. The way it is made, you should get many years out of it. My daughter has had her for awhile now and I can see her wearing it at least another year maybe two. It is 95% cotton, 5% lycra and best of all, made in the USA!

You can also find Rebekah on her blog, The Fortnightly Purse.

The Pajamas Diaries ~ Flashback to Pregnancy!

THE PAJAMA DIARIES has struck a chord with newspaper readers who relate to the strip’s stressed-out protagonist, Jill Kaplan. Starting July 6, Jill and her husband, Rob, will embark on a funny yet poignant trip down memory lane in a five-week series that tells via flashback the story of Jill’s first pregnancy and the Kaplans’ journey towards impending parenthood. The special series, which runs through August 8, is sure to touch the hearts of many readers who have or are expecting children of their own.

Created by cartoonist Terri Libenson, The Pajama Diaries currently appears in more than 100 newspapers across the country, as well as online at Comics Kingdom™, King Features’ online comics portal. Libenson, a married mother of two daughters, ages 9 and 6, admits that her life at times parallels that of her “Pajama Diaries” alter ego Jill Kaplan.

“With my own children growing quickly before my eyes, I have wanted to do a flashback series like this for a while. While drawing the Mother’s Day-themed strip I recently did that showed Jill in the delivery room as a flashback, I realized the time to do it had arrived,” said Libenson. “The strip’s diary-style format lends itself perfectly to creating a flashback series about the birth of Jill’s first daughter, Amy.”

The series begins with Jill looking through an album of baby photos, which gets her reminiscing with her husband, Rob. “It’s been 10 years since I first got pregnant, can you believe it?,” she says incredulously. From there, the series focuses on the couple as they recall the day when Jill discovers that she is pregnant and follows them as they anxiously await and prepare for the arrival of their first child.

From the life-changing, first sonogram that prompts Jill to rethink her career to the inevitable labor and delivery, Libenson deftly crafts a storyline about the progression of a pregnancy with the warmth, insight and humor that only true experience can inform.

The touching series ends with Jill lovingly looking at her baby daughter as she sleeps peacefully in her crib. In the next panel, the baby has morphed into a sleeping 9-year-old little girl. Jill quietly asks Rob, “How did Amy grow up so fast?” Rob replies, “We blinked.”

If you haven't read the Pajama Diaries yet, you can check out some samples here.

ABOUT THE PAJAMA DIARIES

From laundry and carpooling to juggling her freelance work schedule with family obligations, Jill’s diary and blog entries provide readers with an intimate and candid view of modern marriage, work and motherhood.

The idea behind this book is that we all do too much. We take on extra projects at work that aren't a good use of our time because we want to be seen as team players. We end up on PTA committees, serving as assistant coaches with Little League, organizing our third cousin's bridal shower, volunteer, chaperon the middle school dance, chauffeur our kids to sports (and dance/music/tutoring/second language/etc. lessons), attending pointless meetings at work because someone in another department asked for our input ... and so on and so on and so on

Individually, these are all great things to do, but collectively, they can overload our lives. And, especially for parents, who have to place a priority on their children's needs, it's easy for their own needs to get lost in the shuffle.

The basic premise of Hell Yes!: Two Little Words for a Simpler, Happier Life, is that when something comes, ask if it's a “Hell Yes.” If it is, do it! If it's not, it's a “Hell No!” This one simple question cuts to the heart of the matter, allowing you to focus on what's most important to you and your family, and compels you to say no to things that fall in the gray area, where you aren't excited about them, but they aren't heinous to you either.

When I first read about the book, I thought it seemed like a great idea but would be just another how to book. When I received the book, I realized I was wrong. It is such a fun book, you can't help but get in the Hell Yes spirit. It almost reminds me of a picture book for adults. It is a small little book with great images. Each page has only one sentence on it. It is a quick easy read that is motivational!

Carefree Ultra Protection Review

Most women need a little bit of protection and Carefree is a company known for providing that. Now they are launching a brand new product that is even better. Along with the launch of the brand new Carefree Ultra Protection pantiliner, they are also starting the Carefree Fresh Start Fund.

This will be giving women a chance to win $10,000, $5,000, and $3,000 for a “fresh start.” Women can log on to CarefreeFreshStart.com to apply for funding to reach their personal fresh start goals. The top three finalists with the best plans for a fresh start will receive $10,000, $5,000 and $3,000 respectively. The winners will also receive a personal consultation from Ariane de Bonvoisin, change expert and founder of First30Days.com, as well as a three-day/two-night trip to New York City, where they will be honored at the Carefree Fresh Start celebration event, hosted in partnership with Step Up Women's Network. Seven additional finalists will receive $1,000 to help begin making their fresh start.

Through Mom Central I was sent a package of the new Carefree Ultra Protection pantiliner. Designed with an ultra-powerful DRYFLEX™ core, it absorbs ten times more than an ordinary liner (vs Carefree original) – so it’s absorbent enough for any day, but thin enough for every day. With the protection of a pad and the comfort of a liner, no matter what kind of protection you need, CAREFREE® ULTRA PROTECTION™ Liners have got you covered.

I found them to be very comfortable and absorbent. I gave the majority to my daughter and she asked me to buy them again. She really liked them a lot. Carefree is currently giving out free samples to try out. Just fill out this form to receive your sample.

You really should check out the Carefree fresh start. There is some great information. I know I'm entering the contest, that money could really help me get a fresh start. My car recently died, so I think I'd start over again with a newer more reliable car. Something like that could really open up doors for me.

What I love about the fresh start page though, it gives you information on every form of a fresh start. Style, Wellness, Relationships, Career and even a Just for Girls section. Just reading through some of the tips, makes you want to start a new healthier, positive way of looking at life. Plus they partnered with a wonderful website, First 30 Days.

So tell me, do you ever feel the need for a fresh start? Are you going to enter this contest?

Do you {HEART} Getting Flowers, but never Do?

We usually only have flowers in our household once a year ~ Dance Recital time. Yes, my little girls are the only ones that are ever lucky enough to get fresh flowers.

Last week though, I got a big box from Fed Ex, couldn't figure out what it could be. When I opened it up, there was this beautiful bouquet of flowers from the California Cut Flower Commission. My favorite color is yellow, so these couldn't have been more perfect. I loved them so much, I blogged about them right away over at my other blog.

Every time I walk by my kitchen table I get a big smile on my face. I forgot, how much fresh flowers brighten up your day. The best thing about these flowers though, there was no reason behind it. There was no dance recital, it wasn't my birthday or Mother's day. They were just because.

I think we forget that flowers can be just because. Just to put a smile on your face, brighten up somebody's day.

The California Cut Flower Commission wants to encourage people to consider sending flowers more often, and not just on special once-a-year occasions.

The California Cut Flower Commission (CCFC) recently did a survey and concluded that 42% of women don’t receive flowers as often as they would like. Because of this the CCFC has created “Hint Cards” to help deserving mom drop hints that they would like to receive a beautiful bouquet of the world’s freshest flowers like the ones offered by California Grown flowers.

Hint cards are such a great idea! They add a bit of fun way to give a hint to that someone special that you would really appreciate a nice bouquet of flowers.

Some of the Hint cards that I have read...

~ I dare you to buy me flowers

~ Want to make up for it? You know what to do {One of my favorites, such a great way to break the ice after a disagreement as well}

The Hint cards are about the size regular business cards, which makes them a great size to get the idea across. You can stick them in your special someone's wallet, in their lunch, car dashboard, inside their pocket, in the kitchen by the coffee, etc.

Did you know that ~

~ 75% of all US grown flowers come from California, however they account for only approximately 25% of all cut flowers actually sold in the United States. The remainder is imported from South American countries. That is just so wrong! Why import flowers when you can get beautiful AMERICAN GROWN flowers right here in our country. The only time a flower should be imported is if it's something that can't be grown here (like a tropical flower).

~ California’s cut flower industry generates $10.3 billion in economic impact for the State of California and generates 121,950 California jobs and $3.3 billion in wages for other industries. WOW! That is a lot of money and jobs to consider when buying flowers.

~ California's cut flower industry meets the strictest growing standards in the world. They raise hundreds of varieties of flowers.

~ Most of California cut flowers remain in the fields up until 24 hours before you purchase them therefore they are much fresher and will last longer.

I have some great news! The wonderful people over at the California Flower Commission want to send a bunch of my readers some Hint Cards! They really want to get the word out and are willing to send out 25 of my readers hint cards!!! How fun is that????

To enter, tell me a fun way you would use one or more of these hint cards.

Plus, after you receive your hint cards, you will be invited to fill out a survey. This survey will you enter into another giveaway, the grand prize of one free California-grown bouquet every month for one year!

    Electrolux Virtual Lemonade Stand Campaign

With summer, one of the things I think of is Lemonade stands. I have fond memories of holding them, and my kids do as well. It is something they look forward to each summer.

Electrolux and Kelly Ripa must feel the same way because they are kicking off their Virtual Lemonade Stand campaign to drive awareness and raise funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Starting this month, you can visit electroluxappliances.com to design and open your own virtual lemonade stand and even pick the flavors of lemonade you want to feature at your stand, like Sparkling Ginger or Rosemary Watermelon. It is super easy to make, it took me only a couple minutes!

For every stand opened, Electrolux will donate $1 to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF). In addition, you can help the cause even more by buying and sending virtual glasses of lemonade to your friends and family, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting OCRF. This is a great way to celebrate the beginning of summer, let friends know you’re thinking of them, and support a great cause.

Even better, just for opening your stand, and then again every day that you log in and visit your stand, you will be entered to win a new French Door Refrigerator from Electrolux – perfect for storing your own pitchers of lemonade. When others donate to your stand, they will also have a chance to win.

The new French Door Refrigerator by Electrolux has some cool new features that make it a great refrigerator for entertaining. There is the Perfect Temp Drawer™, which provides storage for any number of items that you want to keep at the ideal temperature. It’s also a large enough refrigerator to store everything from party platters to juice boxes. The French Door Refrigerator also offers double the ice so there is always enough ice on hand to fill your pitchers of lemonade.

In addition, Mom Central will be giving away one French Door Refrigerator to a member of our community!* To enter, simply go to momcentral.com and (1) tell us about the lemonade stand you designed on the Electrolux site and which flavors you are ‘selling’ and (2) share your own “summer entertaining” tips/ideas. Mom Central will pick one lucky winner in a random drawing from all entries received! How cool is that?

    * All taxes, including but not limited to federal, state and local taxes, and any other costs and expenses associated with prize acceptance are the sole responsibility of the winner, including any costs of installation.
