World Asthma Day

Did you know that today is World Asthma day? Both my kids have Asthma. It took me years to get my 10 year old diagnosed. She normally doesn't have the standard wheezing, so the doctors wouldn't believe me that she had breathing problems. She does however have a year round cough. It wasn't until I learned about Exercise Induced Asthma & actually said the term to the doctor that they started to believe me. I just went with while she is at dance, this happens. That at least got her the meds she had been needing all this time.

My youngest never had symptoms of Asthma or even Allergies like my oldest always had. When she was 4, she went on a preschool field trip to a farm. That night she was struggling to breath. I wasn't sure what was going on. The next day we took her to the ER because it wasn't getting any better. Her pulse ox was extremely low, mid 80's. The nurse didn't even finish the paperwork, they were like pick her up right now & get back to room x. Me & hubby freaked because we had never had them act like that before. Normally you sit for hours at the Er. They got her on oxygen & she ended up staying in the hospital for about 4 days. Since it was the first time it happened, the doctors told me they couldn't call it Asthma, but off paper she had an attack. After that it has been breathing treatments, tons of meds, steroids, etc. It is getting under control, but it has been a long battle. Especially with the insurance wanting to cover the expensive meds.
What is World Asthma Day?

World Asthma Day is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) in collaboration with health care groups and asthma educators to raise awareness about asthma and improve asthma care throughout the world

Each year GINA chooses a theme and organizes preparation and distribution of World Asthma Day materials and resources. World Asthma Day activities are organized in each country by health care professionals, educators, and members of the public who want to help reduce the burden of asthma.

The first World Asthma Day, in 1998, was celebrated in more than 35 countries in conjunction with the first World Asthma Meeting held in Barcelona, Spain. Participation has increased with each World Asthma Day held since then, and the day has become one of the world's most important asthma awareness and education events.

World Asthma Day 2005

World Asthma Day 2008 will take place on Tuesday, May 6. This year’s event will continue the focus on the positive theme introduced for WAD 2007, “You Can Control Your Asthma.” This theme is consistent with the emphasis on asthma control set out in the latest versions of the GINA guideline documents, and will help to spread the word that asthma control is the goal of treatment and can be achieved in the vast majority of asthma patients with proper management.
