Remembering Romantic trip to Chicago

Years ago, my husband and I decided to take a Romantic little trip to Chicago for a weekend. We are near Detroit, so it isn't so far. We left on a Friday morning and came home Sunday night. We spent our days shopping at all the great Chicago shops, ate at some great restaurants, even enjoyed some time in a park. Being the Romantic women that I am, the Chicago pizza had to have been my favorite part, lol. Since I am a bit of a picky eater, we ate at Foodlife. It is located inside Water Tower Place and is like a food court, but nicer. We also hit Hard Rock Cafe because you can't go to Chicago without going there.

Our hotel was beautiful with a hot tub in the room. Spent a lot of time in the hot tub, so relaxing. We stayed at the Trump Hotel. Ok, I'm kidding, we never could afford that. Our hotel was very nice though. Clean, good food, courteous staff and of course hot tub in the room!

If you are considering going to Chicago, check out things to do in Chicago. I wish when we were planning this little trip, we knew about Trusted Tours & Attractions for vacation ideas. They offer tons of information and all in once place. Back when we planned our trip though, we used those AAA books (remember those?).

If you sign up for Trusted Tours & Attractions newsletter right now, you can enter to win a digital camera. Signing up is quick and easy. Winner will be drawn March 1st, 2008.

Fighting with your spouse is good for you

Good news for hubby & I, University of Michigan has a new study out that says A good fight with your spouse can be good for your health.

Couples who suppressed their anger have a mortality rate twice as high as those in which at least one partner stands up for themselves, according to the study which tracked 192 U.S. couples for 17 years.
"When couples get together, one of their main jobs is reconciliation about conflict," said lead author Ernest Harburg, an emeritus professor with the University of Michigan.
"The key matter is, when the conflict happens, how do you resolve it?" he said.
"When you don't, if you bury your anger, and you brood on it and you resent the other person or the attacker, and you don't try to resolve the problem, then you're in trouble."

Well good thing I do not suppress my anger, lol. The study looked at how suppressed anger affects overall morality. They took in to account age, weight, smoking, blood pressure and a few other health factors as well.

I think even with this, it all depends on the way you fight. If you are yelling and screaming at each other every day, then your stress level will make up for anything that the not suppressing is helping :)

Now go have a good fight with your spouse ...

Super Savings Saturday

I was doing the whole CVS things last year, but took a break after that great Duracell battery deal ended around Xmas. I used all my EC bucks to buy some Xmas presents.

I finally got myself out there to get start again.

This week I shopped at both CVS & Walgreens. I never do Walgreens, I used to work for CVS & just have issues with the way Walgreens is layed out. I know CVS :) Plus all the Walgreens pharmacists around here suck!

Anyways, I bought a bunch of the free after rebate items from Walgreens. I also got the free family pack of pictures. I did a Christmas picture because I am way behind on doing pics. I also ended up buying a Barbie outfit on clearance for $1.59 & then a pack of spiral notebooks for $1. Oh & I bought the Got2Be Gel & Hairspray Buy 1 get 1 free. I'm hoping that will hold my girls hair for Recital & Competitions.

Pretend my picture has a 2nd bottle of the Garnier conditioner, I bought one from CVS & one from Walgreens. I had (1) $1 off coupon as well.

CVS I ended up getting 5 of those 5 x 7 collages. I did a bunch of dance pics & they came out so cute. They were on sale for .99 & then I had 2 $1.49 off coupons. I was just going to get 4 at $1.04 but decided to buy 2 of one of them for Aly (her trip to Tremaine)

Oh & I picked up (3) of the eyeshadows.

CVS Spent $14.24 & still have $10.98 ECB
Walgreens Spent $23.44 & will be getting back $20.27 rebates +10% for getting GC

Fight the Frump Edition #1

Welcome to the first edition of Fight the Frump with Fussy!

Today, Friends of Fussy, let's talk about jewelry! There's way too much ugly out there, and way too little style.

When I was younger, I wore tons of jewelry. Now that I am a mommy of 2, I tend to go with the less is more. Even my wedding ring, I just wear a gold band that I made hubby by for me after my 2nd daughter was born.

10k Choice of White or Yellow Gold Journey Diamond Heart Shaped Pendant (1/5 cttw, G-H Color, I1 Clarity)
14k Yellow Gold 5mm Milgrain Half Round Band I love wearing a simple box chain or other thin chain with a pendant. With valentines day, Hearts are always pretty. I also like to wear the Circle charms or something with a simple stone.

Frumpy fabric flower pin

Of course if you want Frumpy, I found this awesome Frumpy Pin on Etsy :)

If you are sterling silver kind of gal, you can get lots of great non-frumpy jewelry here.

Book Review ~ His Dark Materials

I was originally going to do a review of each boo, but time has slipped by and now I am finished with the series, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. It starts with the Golden Compass, then Subtle Knife and finishes with the Amber Spyglass. I truly enjoyed this series, way more then I ever would have imagined. I used to read fantasy book when I was younger, then turned to mystery. The only time I seem to pick up a fantasy book now is when there is a lot of hype on it. Which is the reason I found these books. I loved the idea of an Atheist author, so I had to grab these books right up.

In the epic trilogy His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman unlocks the door to worlds parallel to our own. Dæmons and winged creatures live side by side with humans, and a mysterious entity called Dust just might have the power to unite the universes--if it isn't destroyed first. The three books in Pullman's heroic fantasy series, published as mass-market paperbacks with new covers, are united here in one boxed set that includes The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. Join Lyra, Pantalaimon, Will, and the rest as they embark on the most breathtaking, heartbreaking adventure of their lives. The fate of the universe is in their hands. (Ages 13 and older)

The Golden Compass introduces you to many of the characters and sets up the backdrop for the entire story line. Pullman does such an amazing job describing the characters and environment, you feel like you are Lyra's world. Watching the movie just added to it for me.

The Subtle Knife is my favorite of all 3. That is when Lyra meets Will & Dr. Malone. A lot of what happened in the first book makes more sense. Whenever I read a series, I always seem to like the one that gives the most information the best. That was how it was with Harry Potter as well, I believe it was the third book that gave all the backstory. After finishing the entire series, that book always stayed my favorite.

The third book I had a hard time reading, and it took me about a week and half. It wasn't because I didn't love it, it was because I knew it was coming to end. This book had a lot of surprises for me. The book was not how I imagined it at all. I thought with bringing in Dr. Malone she would be with Lyra & Will for most of the book. I loved that the book was nothing like I expected, it was very well written. The ending was very hard on me. I don't want to say anything and give it away. I will say all the hype over Lyra & Will kissing, etc was not that bad. I thought it was going to be worse, and a lot of kids reading it wouldn't even realize the depth of what they were reading. That part was needed for the series and ending.

Excellent books! Now I just have to get my hands on Lyra's Oxford.

Also wanted to add that I don't care what any body says, these books were not about killing God. It was a war against the authority that ruled the worlds. Yes there were angels and even talk of God, but really, it is a fantasy book. Being atheist, I loved it, but I think I would have enjoyed it years ago when I was Catholic as well. I think people take fictional books way to seriously. Have fun & enjoy a good story!

I traded all of my copies on Paperback swap, but if you are looking to purchase, you can find some good deals for it on ebay ~ His Dark Materials

Gift Idea ~ Sterling Silver Jewelry

Want a great for Valentines Day & Easter, Sterling Silver Jewelry! This site has some beautiful pieces. You can buy up to 4 every 15 minutes, and then the site changes it to something else. The item is free, you pay $5.99 shipping. The piece also comes in a pretty jewelry pouch. Each piece that has a gemstone, has a real stone in it! I think the Pink is the only CZ stone the site has. I have gotten some really pretty pieces from here, way over the $5.99 price.

Funny from my little Angel

Last night I was reading Junie B. Jones and the Yucky Blucky Fruitcake to Cam. We get to a part where Junie B is practicing throwing a wet sponge & it lands in the toilet. Then she flushes the toilet & it overflows. My little angel bursts out laughing and says ~

Cam: Remember that time I overflowed the toilet?
Me: Yes I do
Cam: Remember how I was trying to clog the toilet with all the toilet paper?
Me: Um, no I didn't know you were TRYING to clog the toilet {sweetie}
Cam: Yeah I wanted to watch you, then she proceeded to pretend to use a plunger because she didn't know what it was called.
Me: So you really did try to clog it, I thought you did that accidentally
Cam: At this point laughing hysterically, No I wanted to watch you use that thing!! I didn't know it would overflow
Me: So you didn't know it would overflow, you just thought it would be funny to watch mommy use the plunger
Cam: Yeah that stick thing, that would have been funny

I couldn't believe it! See how we think kids do things on accident & they are really do it on PURPOSE.

Unbelievable, little stinker.

I thought it was funny that she even remembered it. Now I need to go grill her, I mean ask her about some other incidents

Wordless Wednesday

Helped my dad clean out the closet a few weeks ago. Found a couple old jackets/coats. In one I had at least 6 packs of gum & 2 packs of breathsavers. In the other though, I found gum {again}, TWO cans of Mace & then a clicker frog. I was laughing so hard I had tears streaming my face. I always did wonder what I did with that Mace? Why I had 2 in 1 coat is beyond me. The clicker frog was pretty funny too. At first I was like Why oh why did I carry that around in high school. Then I realized it was from a keychain that broke. Is that any better, you be the judge :) So what is a girl to do with all that goofy stuff? Stick it in my current coat of course. Well not the gum or certs, those went quickly into the garbage.

Be sure to check out more Wordless Wednesday here.

Tackle it Tuesday ~ Hair Items

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

A few weeks ago I bought 5 containers to organize the girls (and my) hair accessories. Before I had them in 1 big bucket & they were getting too hard to use. I started separating them, but never did finish. I had planned on doing this last Tackle it Tuesday, but those bloggy contests took up all my free time :)

I'm going to work on it today & get pics posted! My 5th grader decided she was sick at school, so I had to pick her up. All she has is a runny nose, so I could kill her!

Snuggle Me Contest!!

Redefining Perfect is holding a Snuggle Me Contest right now. Just blog about the contest & mention what makes you warm & snuggly in the cold.

Living in Michigan, I am always cold. I love using lots of blankets. My favorite is this furry one that I bought at JC Penney. Then I use comforter on top of that. I also live in hoodies during the winter! Thick socks & slippers. Sometimes a robe over that.

I love drinking Hot green tea as well. My kids prefer hot chocolate!

Hot showers are great as well. Really Hot! My skin pays for it, but I'm too cold to care.

Folic Acid Linked to Full Term Babies

I was watching the news, and a new study shows that Folic Acid not only helps reduce birth defects in babies, but it also prevents premature birth.

In a large study that included almost 40,000 women, a team of U.S. and Irish researchers found that women who took folic acid supplements for a year or longer before conception had a 70 percent decreased risk of preterm birth between 20 and 28 weeks of gestation.

Any woman that is able to have children, really should be taking Folic Acid, it has other health benefits as well.

What is folic acid and why do we need it?

Also known as Vitamin B9, it plays an important role in facilitating many body processes. Among them are cell maintenance and repair, synthesis of DNA, amino acid metabolism and formation of red and white blood cells.

The benefits of folic acid include inhibiting colon cancer as well as preventing heart disease, as outlined below.

In addition to high cholesterol levels, an equally important risk indicator of heart disease is increased homocysteine, an abnormal protein byproduct. One of the benefits of taking folic acid and other B Vitamins is that they help remove homocysteine from your blood. Too much homocysteine can cause serious artery damage.

A premature birth is one that occurs before 37 weeks' gestation, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Improved medical knowledge and technology have made survival for these small infants more likely -- of babies born at 28 weeks or after, 90 percent are expected to survive, according to the NIH.

My 1st daughter was born at 34 weeks, and my second daughter was born at 35 weeks. I did take folic acid with both pregnancies. With my first I had started taking it about 3 months earlier & with my second I started taking it right when I thought I was pregnant. Even though I have no plans of getting pregnant, I think I am going to start taking it again. Since I know that my body does not do well with pregnancy, and I have preemies, it makes sense. Let's all just hope that I never have to face that issue, two kiddos is enough at this house :)

Super Bowl 2008, Commercials & House

Did you watch the Super Bowl? I honestly have no interest in football, as I sit here in my Detroit Lions sweatshirt, lol. Hey have to have team spirit right? The game was on in the house though, and I caught a few of the commercials.

I was told the commercials are the best part, but I like to catch them all in one place on the internet :)

I have to admit, I was kind of hoping the Patriots would win just because they were undefeated. What a game to lose when you are undefeated. That had to have sucked for that team! It was pretty cool for Eli Manning though!

I watched a bit of the celebration after, but lost interest. I was waiting for House to start. Why would they play House after the Super Bowl anyways? They barely have any episodes left, how silly. I had a hard time watching this episode. It was disturbing watching her try to cure herself. The biopsy did make me a feel just a bit better though. Figure if she can do her own with some ice, I can survive my thyroid biopsy on the 13th. The ending was good, I love who Wilson has been dating, great ending!

Sunday Salon

The Sunday Salon.com

I barely read today. On friday, I finished Amber Spyglass. Sometimes after reading a big series like that, I have a hard time picking up another book. I was trying to read this young adult book, hoping it would be quick but I was only able to get through the first chapter before putting it down. I can't remember the name of it. I think I am going to hold off & start reading Dead Witch Walking. Just have to locate it, hopefully will today so I can start it at dance.

Sorry I don't have more to say, maybe next Sunday :)

Punxsutawney Phil saw his Shadow ~ 6 more weeks

My daughter woke me up yesterday screaming to watch the news, she had to know if the Groundhog saw his shadow. All dazed & confused I managed to get the news on. Guess what, no reporting on the groundhog. Then I had to get in my contacts & check the internet.

Do you know how hard it is to find this kind of information out? Don't these people know that little 6 years are excited to find out & like to drive their mommies nuts? Doesn't help when their teachers send them home with Groundhog 2008 packets & the very first line asks if the shadow was seen!

I was able to find out pretty quickly that Phil did see his shadow. However we are in Michigan, and the girls wanted to know if our Groundhog, Woody saw her shadow. Cnn didn't bother to report until 12:44pm, that meant hours of torment for my beloved little girl, lol.

Woody ended up predicting that Spring will come early. I guess it is done differently, it goes by if she stays out or quickly scurries back in.

Woody emerged from a paper mache stump to predict that spring is right around the corner.

The forecast Saturday morning from Michigan's prognosticating woodchuck at the Howell Conference and Nature Center contradicted the forecast from groundhog Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania of six more weeks of winter.

But Woody's was in line with the forecast from Gen. Beauregard Lee, Punxsutawney Phil's counterpart in Georgia. The Detroit News reports Woody was shown to a cheering crowd of about 100. Woody indicates there will be an early spring by hanging out for at least 30 seconds. Her handlers tell WJBK-TV in Detroit that if she quickly scurries back inside, that means six more weeks of winter.
