A Post a day in May

I decided to play along with All sorts with a post a day in May.

Today was our last day of the 5 day field trip that started a few weeks ago at our Air base. It was a great experience for my 5th grader, and I really enjoyed myself. Everyone got a completion certificate with a Starbase bag & key ring, even us adults. Learned quite a bit & my daughter got to experience some great things.

After school, Aly was supposed to have competition practice but it was canceled. Cam still had her extra ballet class. Before that I did some shopping. I had a couple coupons for JC Penney plus a gift card. I picked up a pair of capri's, a yellow halter top, Skecher sandals & then flip flops for the girls & a top for Aly. I also had a $15gc for Target that I earned from Epoll. Went and picked up a few things there as well. I also found a cute pair of pj's for my oldest at TJ Maxx for $5 & then a cute blue top for $3. Plus a few toys for Cam on clearance. Bought a bag of stuff for under $20! I was trying to find a new purse but no luck.

Great mail coming in ~

Received a product to review from Baby Jamz! Watch for that review in the next couple days. Also received a couple prizes from contests that I won. Will have to post more about those later.

Sincerely 'Fro Me to You Carnival

With Mother's Day fast approaching, I thought I'd post a picture of me & my mom. I think I was about 3 in this picture. That was my favorite dress & I still have it :) I also got pics of both my girls in it. I have many memories of me & that dress. My mom always wanted to be a mom. She wanted a girl first & got me. She spoiled me rotten, seriously!

World Asthma Day

Did you know that today is World Asthma day? Both my kids have Asthma. It took me years to get my 10 year old diagnosed. She normally doesn't have the standard wheezing, so the doctors wouldn't believe me that she had breathing problems. She does however have a year round cough. It wasn't until I learned about Exercise Induced Asthma & actually said the term to the doctor that they started to believe me. I just went with while she is at dance, this happens. That at least got her the meds she had been needing all this time.

My youngest never had symptoms of Asthma or even Allergies like my oldest always had. When she was 4, she went on a preschool field trip to a farm. That night she was struggling to breath. I wasn't sure what was going on. The next day we took her to the ER because it wasn't getting any better. Her pulse ox was extremely low, mid 80's. The nurse didn't even finish the paperwork, they were like pick her up right now & get back to room x. Me & hubby freaked because we had never had them act like that before. Normally you sit for hours at the Er. They got her on oxygen & she ended up staying in the hospital for about 4 days. Since it was the first time it happened, the doctors told me they couldn't call it Asthma, but off paper she had an attack. After that it has been breathing treatments, tons of meds, steroids, etc. It is getting under control, but it has been a long battle. Especially with the insurance wanting to cover the expensive meds.
What is World Asthma Day?

World Asthma Day is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) in collaboration with health care groups and asthma educators to raise awareness about asthma and improve asthma care throughout the world

Each year GINA chooses a theme and organizes preparation and distribution of World Asthma Day materials and resources. World Asthma Day activities are organized in each country by health care professionals, educators, and members of the public who want to help reduce the burden of asthma.

The first World Asthma Day, in 1998, was celebrated in more than 35 countries in conjunction with the first World Asthma Meeting held in Barcelona, Spain. Participation has increased with each World Asthma Day held since then, and the day has become one of the world's most important asthma awareness and education events.

World Asthma Day 2005

World Asthma Day 2008 will take place on Tuesday, May 6. This year’s event will continue the focus on the positive theme introduced for WAD 2007, “You Can Control Your Asthma.” This theme is consistent with the emphasis on asthma control set out in the latest versions of the GINA guideline documents, and will help to spread the word that asthma control is the goal of treatment and can be achieved in the vast majority of asthma patients with proper management.

WFMW: Saving Money on Zoo Memberships

We are lucky enough to live about half hour - 45 minutes from the Detroit Zoo. Since we are on a major budget, what I do is a buy a Zoo Membership around end of July - beginning of August the first year. Then we try to go a few time in August & maybe even September & October. Then we go again when it starts warming up in April, May & then June & July. Then I let the membership expire until the following August. That way my one year membership, lasts 2 years.

It has worked great for us & the kids get to enjoy the zoo each year. Now if you have the money to afford the membership year round, I say go for it. It helps the animals & they deserve it. If you struggle with money though, doing it this way works out wonderfully.

Bring a picnic lunch to save even more money!

Some Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Mother's day is right around the corner, this year it falls on May 11th. We will most likely be at a dance competition that weekend, so I'm not making any plans. My 6 year old is pretty mad about that, she was like there won't be a competition that day because it's Mother's day, they can't do that. I was like, sorry, most likely there will be one, but it is ok because I know you really wanted to spend the day with me. This one is actually pretty close by to us, so maybe I'll bring her. Hopefully she won't get the comp bug though, too expensive. Ok on with the gifts ~

Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair Photo Shoot

I was not going to talk about this on my blog since it is everywhere right now. However something kind of funny happened last night, so thought I'd blog about it.

First if you haven't heard and btw where have you been? Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana did a questionable photo shoot with Vanity Fair recently. I first saw the pictures on the View, then turned on the computer and was bombarded with it. I personally thought the picture was totally inappropriate. My first thought was why would these adults in her life ok this? And why did Annie Leibovitz ever think it was artful to have a child naked with only a cloth covering her? If I took a photo like that and published it of my children, I'd be arrested for child porn. I find it interesting that in her interview with the magazine that accompanies the spread, she called the back-baring shot "really artsy" but not "in a skanky way" and said "You can't say no to Annie."

Miley did issue a statement of apology and that makes me even more upset. I don't feel that this is any way her fault, nor should SHE feel embarrassed over it. If anything, her parents, her managers, even Vanity Fair should feel embarrassed, not a 15 year old girl.

I can see how they are saying the shot is artsy, and you know it would be if she was 18! It is a beautiful picture of it with little make-up, but she is still a child and it is inappropriate.

Now for the reason for my blog post :) Last night, my 6 year old was watching Disney Channel. She started asking me if Miley Cyrus is as popular as Vanessa Hudgens. I said I think she is a bit more popular, why? Then my daughter asked if she had pictures taken of her {Miley}. I was like Why what did you hear? I thought it was so odd for her to ask this right after the big scandal erupted yesterday.

She just said she was wondering if she had pictures like Vanessa did. Then I start explaining that she had some pictures taken for a magazine, and I asked her if she heard something at school. Of course, she said she had not, so I opened my mouth for nothing. Then we got to have a fun conversation all over again about pictures, etc. When the Vanessa scandal happened, my mom had told the kids that sometimes when you are famous people take pictures of you. What made her ask me about Miley Cyrus last night, I will never know. What weird timing. I wonder if maybe she saw a news commercial or something flipping channels and heard something about a picture.

Luckily my girls never heard about the first or second picture scandals that involved Miley. I really feel bad for her, she is only 15. All girls do silly goofy things and with the ease of digital cameras and the internet, it can be a bad mix. It is also hard being a mom of young fans, trying to explain all this stuff.

Review ~ Carpe Demon by Julie Kenner

I just finished up reading Carpe Demon by Julie Kenner. This is a really fun, cute book. It is about a retired demon hunter, who is know a stay at home mom. She has a teenager and a toddler, plus a husband running in politics. We all know how busy it is to be a mom, know the heroine Kate has to hunt Demons as well. Book is written well, with funny pieces thrown in to make you laugh. Has a unique perspective on how demons walk the earth, which I loved. Carpe Demon reminds me of a cozy mystery, but it is about demons instead of crime.

    Back of book ~

Carpools. Crabgrass. Creatures from the depths of hell. Suburbia has its problems too...

Lots of women put their careers aside once the kids come along. Kate Connor, for instance, hasn't hunted a demon in ages...

That must be why she missed the one wandering through the pet food aisle of the San Diablo Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, he managed to catch her attention an hour later—when he crashed into the Connor house, intent on killing her.

Now Kate has to clean up the mess in her kitchen, dispose of a dead demon, and pull together a dinner party that will get her husband elected to County Attorney—all without arousing her family's suspicion. Worse yet, it seems the dead demon didn't come alone. He was accompanied by a High Demon named Goramesh who, for some unknown reason, intends to kill off the entire population of San Diablo.

It's time for Kate Connor to go back to work.

You can read the first chapter here.

    mom weight loss

I have been bad & forgetting to post my results. I've been keeping up on the fitness though. I've lost about a pound and a half since starting this. I honestly didn't think I'd lose anything since it has been so long since I lost weight, so I'm excited. I've been thinking about what I have been eating & thinking about my health & fitness. This is the reason I joined this challenge, so I'm feeling good.

I always go & buy a Sunday paper. Yesterday was a very nice day & I realized that was a perfect reason to walk to the gas station & buy the paper that way. Give me a reason to walk & give my car a break. I can't believe I haven't thought of it before, lol. I plan on doing this more often now that the weather is getting nicer. Except we are supposed to have snow this week, what?

I found some good exercise resources on the web & thought I'd share ~

Webkinz Day Extravaganza ~ May & June POTM

Don't forget that the Webkinz Extravaganza is going on from Friday April 25th - Sunday April 27th. Check the Webkinz Website for stores near you. All the Hallmarks around me are giving away a free Webkinz with every $10 purchase up to $20. I bought my daughters the Lil Kinz Mouse & they each the Cocker Spaniel for free! There are also coloring contests, Wheel of Wow, Gem Hunt, Jellybean challenge & more going on!

If your kids don't have these yet, now is a great time to try them out! They are a lot of fun & actually a bit educational. The kids can do a job every 8 hours, grow a garden & sell the fruit/vegetables. They use the money to buy items for their houses. If you don't take care of your pet by feeding, putting to bed & giving baths; they get sick & have to go to the doctor. I was surprised that it does teach them some things! My kids aren't allowed to have any pets other then the 1 cat that we have had for 13 years. This is there only pet, lol.

Oh depending on your store: The Webkinz Panda is the May Pet of the Month & the Webkinz Elephant is the June pet of the month. You also still have time to get the Webkinz Pink Poodle for April's pet.

    * Update * Ok my kids went crazy with their allowance at this Extravaganza & asked me if they could go back today, lol. I said, yeah umm NO. They each won a sucker from a gem hunt. Cam started to cry when she realized she could have won a Webkinz. She did win a little frog & a little lizard in the Wheel of Wow. Aly wons one of those goofy popper things. I was surprised she picked that because lip gloss was in her slot. She also won the Yorkie cheerleader figurine from a ball toss. That was another one that had Cam's in tears that she lost, so we ended up buying her the Pinto horse figurine. They were 30% off though.

I picked up 2 of the Lil Kinz mice for the girls & got 2 of the Cocker Spaniels for free. I put away the freebies for birthdays or some other thing I need a gift for them they. One of the stores ran out of some of the free ones & were substituting it with the June Elephant, so I bought one & got one for free for June. Then anther store ran out, so Cam got the Grey Arabian Horse & the Grey Cat at 1/2 off & Aly bought the Lil Kinz Polar bear for 10% off. She also wanted the Yorkie, but I already had those in the basement, so she bought one of them for me. They were going to be a Xmas present but they ended up getting a ton, so then I was going to give them for Easter, but they got some others, so I just had them & the girls didn't know. Oh & I also got a Goobers Lab bookmark to make the mice go over $10 each. Not sure what to do with that yet either. Oh these Webkinz, they are killing me!
