Review ~ Truly Dead by Anne Frasier

I waited a year to read the fourth book in this series. I was lucky enough to be given a review copy from Anne Frasier and Netgalley and devoured this book in 2 days. The book is officially out now and available on kindle unlimited!

I will admit, the beginning through me off. I felt like I forgot something, so I went back and read some reviews of the 3rd book. I had read the first three, one after the other, so it took me a second to reorient myself.

I'm terrible at writing reviews, but I love the characters in this book. I love the touch of paranormal, the Savannah setting, the character descriptions, everything. I can picture myself inside the story, getting to know the characters. I love that Elise and David have flaws. Sometimes books have those to perfect characters that you can't relate to.

This series is a must read. There is enough character development to get attached, thrill and suspense to keep you reading all in one sitting. I recommend starting with book 1 if you haven't read them yet. Totally worth the read!

January 2017 Books Read

Read/Listened to 13 Books in January

I listened to the audio version of Roadside Crosses: A Kathryn Dance Novel which is the 2nd in the Kathryn Dance series. I enjoy this series, mainly because the main character has a different job you usually find in mysteries. She works for the California Bureau of Investigations as a body language expert.

The Monterey Peninsula is rocked when a killer begins to leave roadside crosses beside local highways -- not in memoriam, but as announcements of his intention to kill. And to kill in particularly horrific and efficient ways: using the personal details about the victims that they've carelessly posted in blogs and on social networking websites.

This wasn't one of my favorite books, but it wasn't horrible. I think it was the subject matter was disturbing to me. The Bone Man's Daughters

They call him BoneMan, a serial killer who's abducted six young women. He's the perfect father looking for the perfect daughter, and when his victims fail to meet his lofty expectations, he kills them by breaking their bones and leaving them to die.

Intelligence officer Ryan Evans, on the other hand, has lost all hope of ever being the perfect father. His daughter and wife have written him out of their lives.

Everything changes when BoneMan takes Ryan's estranged daughter, Bethany, as his seventh victim. Ryan goes after BoneMan on his own.

But the FBI sees it differently. New evidence points to the suspicion that Ryan is BoneMan. Now the hunter is the hunted, and in the end, only one father will stand.

Started Contagion in December and lost it under my bed. Finally found it and finished it. This is the second book in a series about Jack Stapleton and Laurie Montgomery. The first book focused on Laurie and this book was based around Jack.

When not one but three different extremely rare diseases kill several patients at a New York hospital, forensic pathologist Jack Stapleton suspects it's more than just coincidence. He thinks there's a connection between the appearance of the mysterious microbes responsible for the deaths and the HMO that owns the hospital--the same HMO that once destroyed his flourishing medical practice.

I really enjoyed this book  and plan to read the next in the series!

Spectrum (The Karen Vail Series, Book 6) is the 6th book in the Agent Vail series. I found this series on Hoopla through my library and am really enjoying it!

The year is 1995 and the NYPD has just graduated a promising new patrol officer named Karen Vail. The rookie s first day on the job is anything but easy when she finds herself at the crime scene of a young woman murdered in an unusual manner.

The story starts in present day and goes back to 1995 telling the story of a serial killer and Agent Vails path through her career. Great series, start with book one though! The 7th Victim (The Karen Vail Series, Book 1)

I'm a huge Alyssa Milano fan so I've been wanting to read her Hacktivist series even though I'm not really into Graphic Novels. I did enjoy it and glad I gave it a chance.

Hacktivist is a fast-paced cyber-thriller about friendship and freedom in a time of war. The world knows Ed Hiccox and Nate Graft as the young, brilliant co-founders of YourLife, a social networking company that has changed the way the world connects with each other. The world knows "sve_Urs3lf" as the largest white-hat hacking group on the planet, exposing information and sparking revolutions across the globe. What the world doesn't know is that this is a lie. Ed Hiccox and Nate Graft are sve_Urs3lf. When their operation is discovered by the US Government, and their company is taken over by military contracts and CIA, Ed and Nate must face the real world beyond the code and choose between friendship and what they believe to be right.

The Blue Nowhere was included in the back of Roadside Crosses audio book. It was an mp3 which my car doesn't play so I listened to it on my computer while doing other things. I didn't fully pay attention to be honest. I'm sure it's a great story but I kept getting distracted. That is why I prefer audio while driving.

His code name is Phate -- a sadistic computer hacker who infiltrates people's computers, invades their lives, and with chilling precision lures them to their deaths.

To stop him, the authorities free imprisoned former hacker Wyatt Gillette to aid the investigation. Teamed with old-school homicide detective Frank Bishop, Gillette must combine their  talents to catch a brilliant and merciless killer.

False Accusations was written by the same author that writes the Agent Vail series. I really enjoy the details that Alan Jacobson puts into his stories. There is obviously a lot of research involved. This book was so good!

Everything Dr. Phillip Madison has -- wealth, power, a privileged life in the suburbs -- comes crashing down when he is charged with double homicide: a brutal hit-and-ran that has killed a young couple. Blood evidence and an eyewitness have placed him at the crime scene. And Madison has no alibi.

I discovered Lisa Unger last year and like her writing style. Sliver of Truth (Ridley Jones) is the 2nd book in a two book series. You must read the first (Beautiful Lies) in order to understand this one at all. I enjoyed the first book better but this was a great continuation to it.

In Beautiful Lies, Ridley Jones stepped off a street corner and into an abyss of violence, deception, and fear. She is being a lot more careful about where she steps and trying to get on with her life when another seemingly mundane act—picking up a few envelopes of prints at a photo lab—puts her at the nexus of a global network of crime

I read the 10th book in the Food Truck Mysteries, Deadly Beloved. I was only able to find it in the FOOD TRUCK MYSTERIES: Books 6-10 (A Cozy Mystery Bundle), but I was able to read for free with Kindle Unlimited. This is a fun cozy series that I really enjoy.  ** It's only .99 at time of writing for 5 books!

Maeve and Land's wedding is just a few days away.
A woman shows up at the food truck and asks to see Land. She say's tell him his wife is here to see him.

This is another audio that I listened to, The Couple Next Door. I got it from overdrive from the library so listened on my computer. I really enjoy psychological thrillers. This wasn't my favorite, but it was pretty good. It had some great twists and turns in it.

Your neighbour told you that she didn't want your six-month-old daughter at the dinner party. Nothing personal, she just couldn't stand her crying.

Your husband said it would be fine. After all, you only live next door. You'll have the baby monitor and you'll take it in turns to go back every half hour.

Your daughter was sleeping when you checked on her last. But now, as you race up the stairs in your deathly quiet house, your worst fears are realized. She's gone.

I came across The Murder Game through Kindle unlimited and didn't realize that the author Julie Apple is actually a character in another book Fractured written by Catherine McKenzie. In Fractured, Julie is on the runner from a stalker that started following her after writing her book The Murder Game. Kind of cool, I'm reading Fractured right now, but I really enjoyed Murder Game. I read it really fast, almost finishing it the first day.

Ten years working as a prosecutor have left Meredith Delay jaded and unsure of what she wants out of life. She’s good at her job, but it haunts her. Her boyfriend wants her to commit, but she keeps him at arm’s length. Then Meredith is assigned to a high-profile prosecution involving the violent murder of a fallen hockey star. At first, it appears to be just another case to work. But when her old friend Julian is accused of the murder, it takes on a whole new dimension.

Meredith, Julian, Jonathan, and Lily were a tight-knit group in law school. But now, Jonathan’s defending Julian, and Lily’s loyalties aren’t clear. And when Julian invokes a rare—and risky—defense, Meredith is forced to confront their past.

Has something they played at as students finally been brought to death?

Targeted is the 4th book in the Callahan & McLane series. This is another series I found through Kindle Unlimited. It's a pretty good series. I really like the character Ava who is with the FBI.

All Detective Mason Callahan wanted was a quiet fishing trip with the guys—a chance to get away and unwind before Halloween.
Until he finds the body of his boss, Denny Schefte, near their remote Oregon cabin. Now all he wants is to catch the sadist who slit Denny’s throat and covered his face with a mask. Mason was the last person to see him alive and will stop at nothing to find his friend’s murderer.
When the FBI learns of the mask left at the scene, they realize they have a serial killer on their hands—one who is targeting cops. They assign the case to Special Agent Ava McLane, despite her engagement to Mason. Barely recovered from her own nearly fatal injury and her sister’s attempted suicide, Ava hopes she is ready to chase another killer.

But as she delves into the increasingly disturbing case, the killer may be closer than expected—dangerously close.
